Connected Curriculum Rationale

The Elm Park Connected Curriculum aims to inspire and enrich children’s learning experiences whilst ensuring high achievement across the whole National Curriculum. Children learn in different ways and as such, we believe  it is important that our curriculum aims to engage children in a creative and experiential manner, and that all of our children are challenged to aim high and demonstrate their understanding in a variety of ways .

In an energetic and fast-changing world, we endeavour to ensure that our children develop skills for their life-long learning journey through meaningful and fun activities. Our curriculum focuses on our core vision of Inspiring, Enriching, Achieving whilst also incorporating our key learning drivers: Community, Creativity and Well-being and is organised around  themes, each with a focus on a particular subject within the National Curriculum.   Our Connected Curriculum uses the basis of Chris Quigley’s essential curriculum where children’s learning is linked to key subject themes:

Connect Curriculum Termly Focus

• Terms 1 and 2 – History and Geography
• Terms 3 and 4 – Science and Design and Technology (STEM)
• Terms 5 and 6 – The Arts

How will this work?

We will base our learning across 2 short terms on a question e.g. What was it like to be a child in the past?  The teachers will then plan and deliver a range of learning opportunities for knowledge and skills linked to this.  Each long term will begin with a Bang day.  This is an opportunity for all children across the school to be inspired at the start of their learning.  To end the unit of work, we will have a WOW day.  This is an opportunity for the children to showcase their learning to family and friends. 

Following the publication of the National Curriculum in 2014, our curriculum subject overviews detail the skills and knowledge that the children will learn during their time at primary school. These can be found below. From these documents, our teaching team plan units of learning. These are summarised in the form of Connected Curriculum maps which are updated and published throughout the school year.
